Painters in southwest Calgary.
Infill new builds beside century character homes beside 1990s hillside stucco. The southwest asks more of prep than anywhere else in Calgary.

What makes painting southwest Calgary homes different?
Garage doors in the southwest
Curb appeal carries more weight in Aspen Woods, West Springs, Signal Hill and Cougar Ridge than almost anywhere in the city, and many of those complexes have colour rules to match. A faded or mismatched garage door on a west-facing elevation is the most visible thing on the house.
West and south exposure is the local factor: those doors take the full late-afternoon sun at 1,100 m, so they chalk faster than the same door would facing a back lane. Send us the approved palette if your community has one and we will work to it.
Character homes, infills and everything between
Elbow Park, Britannia, Mount Royal and parts of Altadore hold some of the oldest housing stock in the city. On those homes the trim, casing and doors are frequently original wood carrying decades of oil-based enamel. Latex will not bond to a cured oil film without a proper bonding primer, and skipping that step is the single most common reason a repainted door starts peeling in strips within a year.
The infill wave through Altadore, Killarney and Marda Loop produced tall, narrow homes with flat stucco or fibre cement faces, dark accent panels and a lot of black window trim. Dark colours on a west-facing infill wall take the worst of Calgary's high-altitude UV, so pigment quality on those elevations genuinely determines whether the house looks right in year six.
Up the hill — Signal Hill, Aspen Woods, Springbank Hill, Discovery Ridge — is 1990s and 2000s stucco on exposed, wind-loaded lots with steep driveways and walkout grades. Access equipment, not paint, is often the cost driver there.
- Bonding primer over legacy oil-based trim in character homes
- Cabinet refinishing — the most requested SW interior job
- Tall infill elevations with dark accent colours
- Hillside stucco with walkout-grade access
Cabinets: the southwest's favourite renovation
Kitchens in Killarney, Lakeview, Glamorgan and Currie carry a lot of honey oak and 2000s maple that is structurally perfect and visually dated. Refinishing those doors runs a fraction of replacement and takes days rather than weeks.
The process is what matters: doors removed and labelled, everything degreased, scuff-sanded, bonding-primed, then sprayed with a cabinet-grade lacquer or hybrid enamel so the finish levels out without brush marks. Anyone rolling latex straight onto oak doors is selling you a finish that chips at the first fingernail.
Older homes deserve a straight answer
Homes built before 1978 may have lead-containing paint under later layers. We do not pretend otherwise. If your home is that vintage and the existing coating is failing, we talk about testing and containment before quoting a heavy scrape.
Plaster walls behave differently to drywall too — they crack along lath lines and need a flexible filler rather than a quick skim of lightweight compound.

Southwest Calgary painting questions
Can you paint over oil-based trim in an older SW home?
Yes, with a bonding primer. We test the existing finish first — a cotton pad with denatured alcohol tells us quickly whether it is oil or latex — then prime accordingly. Skipping that step is why repainted trim peels.
How much does cabinet painting cost in southwest Calgary?
A typical Calgary kitchen runs about $3,000 to $6,500 depending on door count, whether boxes and interiors are included, and whether the existing finish is a factory conversion varnish. It is usually a third or less of replacement cost.
Do you handle homes with lead-era paint?
We flag it rather than gloss over it. If your home predates 1978 and the coating is failing, we discuss testing and safe containment before quoting anything that involves aggressive scraping or sanding.
Can you reach three-storey infill elevations?
Yes. Tall narrow infills usually need staging or a lift rather than ladders, and that gets priced into the estimate honestly instead of being discovered on day one.
