Cabinets

Cabinet painting in Calgary — a new kitchen at a fraction of the cost.

Doors removed, degreased, sanded, bonding-primed and sprayed to a hard, wipeable finish. The boxes are usually fine. It is the colour that has aged.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Calgary?

Cabinet painting in Calgary generally runs about $3,000 to $6,000 for a standard kitchen of 25 to 35 doors and drawer fronts, sprayed in a durable finish. That is typically a quarter to a third of the cost of replacing the same cabinetry, and it takes days rather than weeks.

Why cabinets are a spray job, not a brush job

Cabinets get touched constantly, so the finish has to be hard, level and cleanable. Brush marks on a kitchen door are permanent and obvious in raking light. The finish that lasts is sprayed: doors and drawer fronts come off, get labelled, and are finished flat in a controlled space, while frames and boxes are masked and sprayed in place.

The prep is where the durability lives. Every surface gets degreased — kitchen cabinets carry years of aerosolised cooking oil that nothing bonds to — then scuff sanded and coated with a bonding primer chosen for the substrate, whether that is oak, maple, melamine or thermofoil.

  • Doors and drawer fronts removed, labelled and finished off-site or in a masked bay
  • Full degrease, scuff sand and bonding primer
  • Two to three sprayed coats of cabinet-grade enamel
  • Hinges and hardware refitted, doors re-hung and aligned
  • Optional: new hardware, interior boxes, or a contrasting island

What painting cabinets does and does not fix

It transforms colour and finish. Honey oak from 1998 becomes a warm off-white or a deep juniper green. Dated melamine becomes something that reads current. The layout, the boxes and your existing storage stay exactly as they are.

What it will not do is fix broken hinges, sagging boxes, water-swollen bases under a leaking sink, or a layout you dislike. If the carcasses are failing, paint is money on top of a problem. We will tell you when that is what we are looking at.

Timeline and living through it

A typical kitchen takes three to five working days. You keep the use of your sink and appliances for most of it — the doors are off, so you are living with open shelving for a few days rather than a demolished room.

Compare that with replacement: weeks of lead time on cabinetry, a torn-out kitchen, and a bill that starts where cabinet painting ends.

Questions people ask

How long does painted cabinetry last?

With a proper degrease, bonding primer and cabinet-grade enamel, expect eight to ten years of daily use before the high-touch doors near the sink and stove start to show wear. Those specific doors can be refreshed later without redoing the whole kitchen.

Can you paint oak cabinets without the grain showing?

Partly. Oak has deep open grain, and a standard paint finish will still read as textured wood. If you want a fully smooth, slab-like finish, the grain has to be filled first — extra labour and extra cost, but achievable. We will price both so you can choose.

Can you paint laminate, melamine or thermofoil cabinets?

Yes, with the right bonding primer. These surfaces are designed to resist adhesion, so the primer choice is the entire job. Thermofoil that is already peeling from the substrate needs that section addressed before finishing.

Do we need to empty the cabinets?

Empty the lower drawers and anything within a foot of a door opening. We mask the interiors, but sanding and spraying make dust and overspray, and you will be happier if the everyday dishes are out of the way.
