Paint colours for Calgary homes in 2026.
Calgary sits at 1,045 metres with more sunshine than any major Canadian city. That light is bright, cool and unforgiving — it makes grey read blue and beige read yellow, which is why colour choices that work in Toronto often look wrong here.

What paint colours work best in Calgary homes?
The 2026 colours of the year, and whether they work here
Benjamin Moore selected Silhouette AF-655, a soft mid-grey with a warm undertone, as its 2026 Colour of the Year. Sherwin-Williams chose Universal Khaki SW 6150, a warm tan-neutral. Both point the same direction the whole industry has moved: away from the cold greys of 2012–2020 and toward neutrals with visible warmth.
In Calgary specifically, that shift helps. Our light strips warmth out of a colour, so a paint that already carries some warmth lands as neutral on the wall, while a technically neutral grey lands cold and slightly blue. If you have ever picked a grey in the store and hated it at home, this is why.
Interior colours that hold up in our light
North-facing rooms in Calgary get consistent, cool, indirect light — they need warmth added back. South and west rooms get intense direct sun that will bleach a delicate colour and blow out a bright white. Basements, which most Calgary homes have and many families use daily, need a light reflectance value high enough to compensate for small windows.
The practical rule: test on the actual wall, at three different times of day, with the room's own lighting on. A visualizer gets you to a shortlist of three quickly; a sample on the wall picks the winner.
- North rooms: warm off-whites, soft greige, muted clay
- South and west rooms: deeper tones hold up; bright whites glare
- Basements: LRV above roughly 60 to keep the space from closing in
- Trim: a warm white one or two steps off the wall rather than stark white
Exterior colours that survive Calgary UV
At this altitude UV load is high, and fade is the defining exterior colour risk. Deep saturated reds and bright blues shift noticeably within a few years. Charcoal, forest and juniper greens, blue-greys and warm greiges age much better, partly because the pigments used to make them are more lightfast and partly because fade on a muted colour is simply less visible.
Vinyl siding adds a hard constraint: too dark a colour absorbs heat and warps the panel. Vinyl-safe formulations exist for exactly this reason and should be specified rather than assumed.
- Ages well: charcoal, deep green, blue-grey, warm greige, black trim
- Ages badly: saturated red, bright navy, strong terracotta on south walls
- Vinyl siding: use vinyl-safe colours only
- Stucco: mid-tones hide the texture's natural shadow variation best
Choosing for resale versus choosing for yourself
If you are selling within two years, stay in the warm-neutral band: it photographs well, reads clean in listing images, and does not force a buyer to imagine repainting. If you are staying, paint the colour you actually want. A repaint is one of the few renovations you can undo cheaply.
The compromise most Calgary homeowners land on is neutral in the open, shared areas and something with real character in a den, dining room, powder room or feature wall.
Questions people ask
What is Benjamin Moore's 2026 colour of the year?
Silhouette AF-655, a soft warm-leaning mid-grey. It suits Calgary's cool, bright light better than the colder greys of the previous decade.
What is Sherwin-Williams' 2026 colour of the year?
Universal Khaki SW 6150, a warm tan neutral that reads as a grounded, natural backdrop rather than a beige.
Why does grey paint look blue in my Calgary house?
Calgary's high-altitude light is cooler and brighter than most of Canada, which pulls the cool undertone out of a grey. Choosing a grey with a warm or greige undertone corrects it.
What exterior colour is most popular in Calgary right now?
Charcoal and deep greens on siding with black or bronze trim remain the dominant choice, particularly in newer northwest and southeast communities. Warm greiges are the leading choice on stucco.

- ClimateChinooks & paint failureA chinook can move the temperature 20–30°C in a few hours, dozens of times a winter. Each swing works moisture behind the coating and breaks the bond. Prep, not price per litre, is what survives it.
- ClimateHail & repaintingHail pits paint film as well as denting panels. Painting over unrepaired siding buries the problem and can complicate an insurance claim — settle the claim and repair the substrate first, then paint.
- TimingBest time to paintMost exterior coatings need day and overnight temperatures above about 10°C to cure, which makes late May to mid-September the dependable window. Everyone books the same four months, so quote in spring.
- SubstrateStucco vs HardieStucco is porous and cracks with wall movement, so it needs breathable coatings and real crack repair. Fibre cement is dimensionally stable and the most paint-friendly cladding in the city.
