The best time to paint a house exterior in Calgary.
There is a real answer to this and it is narrower than most homeowners expect: roughly sixteen usable weeks, and everyone in the city wants the same eight of them.

When should you paint a house exterior in Calgary?
The temperature rule that governs everything
Manufacturers publish a minimum application temperature — commonly 10°C, with some low-temp formulations rated to 2°C. What matters in Calgary is not the afternoon high but the overnight low, because coalescence, the process by which acrylic particles fuse into a continuous film, keeps happening for hours after the surface feels dry.
A 17°C afternoon followed by a 1°C night gives you a film that never fully forms. It looks fine in October and fails by the second spring. This is the single most common reason a late-season bargain repaint disappoints.
- Air and surface above ~10°C during application, and through the night after
- No rain forecast for 24 hours after the final coat
- Avoid painting a wall in direct afternoon sun — the film skins before it levels
- Watch dew point in September; morning condensation ruins an early start
Month by month in Calgary
April and early May are unreliable — warm afternoons, freezing nights, and the odd snowfall. Late May opens the season and is a genuinely good time to paint: crews are fresh, schedules are open, and the sun is not yet punishing.
June and July are peak, with hail risk climbing. August is peak plus smoke — wildfire haze can shut down a day, and ash settling on a wet coat is a real problem in bad years. Early September is quietly the best-kept slot: stable weather, low humidity, and crews with room in the calendar. Past the third week of September the overnight lows make it a gamble.
Interiors do not care what month it is
Interior painting runs all twelve months. Winter is the smart time to do it: painters have capacity, you are inside anyway, and modern low-VOC coatings do not require the windows-open ventilation older paints did.
If you are planning a whole-house project, the efficient pattern in Calgary is interiors in the winter, exteriors the following summer — one crew, one relationship, two seasons.
When to actually get a quote
March and April. The good crews in this city fill their summer by early May, and the ones with availability in July are usually the ones who could not fill their spring. Quoting early also means you are choosing your colour with time rather than under pressure.

Questions people ask
What is the minimum temperature to paint outside in Calgary?
About 10°C for most exterior acrylics, measured on the surface and maintained through the overnight cure. Some low-temperature formulations are rated to 2°C, but they still fail if the wall is damp or the night drops below spec.
Can you paint a house exterior in October in Calgary?
Occasionally in the first week if there is a warm stretch, but it is a gamble. Overnight lows below 10°C prevent the film from curing properly, and the failure does not show up until spring.
Is it cheaper to paint in the off season?
For interiors, yes — winter capacity is real and pricing softens. For exteriors there is no meaningful off-season discount in Calgary, because the season is short enough that crews are busy through all of it.
How long does an exterior repaint take?
A typical detached two-storey runs three to five working days including prep and washing, weather permitting. Rain or a hail day pushes it, which is another reason to avoid booking against the very end of the season.

- ClimateChinooks & paint failureA chinook can move the temperature 20–30°C in a few hours, dozens of times a winter. Each swing works moisture behind the coating and breaks the bond. Prep, not price per litre, is what survives it.
- ClimateHail & repaintingHail pits paint film as well as denting panels. Painting over unrepaired siding buries the problem and can complicate an insurance claim — settle the claim and repair the substrate first, then paint.
