Siding

Siding painting in Calgary — matched to your actual cladding.

Hardie, vinyl, wood and aluminium each fail differently and each need different prep. Getting the primer wrong is how a two-year-old paint job starts peeling in sheets.

Can you paint siding instead of replacing it?

Yes, in most cases. Fibre cement, wood, aluminium and vinyl siding can all be painted if the panels are structurally sound and properly prepped. Painting typically costs a fraction of replacement and takes days instead of weeks. Replacement only makes sense when panels are cracked, rotted or failing at the fastener.

Fibre cement and Hardie board

Fibre cement is the most paint-friendly cladding in Calgary. It is dimensionally stable through freeze-thaw, it holds an acrylic coating beautifully, and factory colour that has faded after a decade or more comes back to life with two coats.

The work is in the details: caulk joints and butt seams need inspection and renewal, cut ends need priming, and any spot where water can sit needs sorting before coating. Done properly a repaint on Hardie is one of the longest-lasting exterior jobs available here.

Vinyl siding — and the heat problem

Vinyl can absolutely be painted, but colour choice is a physics constraint, not a taste one. Dark paint absorbs more solar heat than the panel was engineered for, and vinyl expands, warps and buckles when it overheats. On a west-facing Calgary wall in July that is a real risk.

The solution is vinyl-safe paint lines formulated with heat-reflective pigments, which let you go meaningfully darker than the original panel without the warping risk. There is still a limit. If you want charcoal on vinyl, we will tell you exactly where that limit sits rather than take the job and hope.

Wood and aluminium

Wood siding is the highest-prep surface on this list. Failed coating gets scraped back, bare wood gets sanded and spot-primed, split or rotted boards need carpentry before paint, and end grain needs sealing. Done right it looks superb; skipped, it peels within a couple of Calgary winters.

Aluminium is common on older Calgary homes and typically arrives chalking — that powdery residue on your hand when you touch it. All of it has to be washed off, because paint will not bond to chalk. After a proper wash and a bonding primer, aluminium takes an acrylic finish well.

  • Wash to remove chalking, dust and organic growth
  • Scrape, sand and spot-prime failed or bare areas
  • Renew caulking at joints, corners and penetrations
  • Substrate-matched bonding primer
  • Two coats of exterior acrylic — vinyl-safe where required

Questions people ask

How do I know what my siding is made of?

Fibre cement is heavy, rigid and sounds solid when tapped. Vinyl flexes and has visible overlap seams that slide. Aluminium dents rather than cracks and often leaves chalk on your hand. Send us a close-up photo and we will identify it for you.

Will painting void my Hardie warranty?

Repainting fibre cement is normal and expected — factory finishes are warranted for a period and then repainted. Warranty terms vary by product and installation date, so check your documentation if the siding is recent. Painting the cladding does not itself compromise the board.

How dark can I go on vinyl siding?

With vinyl-safe paint you can typically go several shades darker than the original panel colour, but true blacks and deep charcoals stay risky on sun-facing elevations. We assess your orientation and exposure and give you a straight answer for your specific wall.

Is painting siding cheaper than replacing it?

Substantially — usually a fraction of the cost, and measured in days rather than weeks of disruption. Replacement wins only when the panels themselves have failed: cracking, rot, or fasteners letting go.
