What do painters cost in Calgary, Alberta?
Why hiring painters here takes longer than it should
The pattern is the same across the city. You decide to paint, you call three companies, and then you wait. One never calls back. One books a site visit eleven days out. The third arrives, walks the space, and emails a single number a week later with no explanation of what is actually included. By then the season has moved or the motivation has.
Coatly exists because the crew got tired of watching that happen. The estimate is the bottleneck, not the painting, so we moved the estimate to the front: your photo, your colour, your number, in minutes. Same trade experience behind it — over ten years on Alberta homes — just without the phone tag.
- Interior residential estimates in minutes, not days
- Colour previewed on a photo of your own wall before you commit
- Written scope so you can see what is and is not included
- Liability insurance, certificate sent on request
- Calgary-based crew, all four quadrants plus surrounding towns
- No deposit taken to look at your project
See the colour on your own wall first
Most people do not stall on price. They stall on colour. A two-inch chip stapled to a paint store wall under fluorescent light tells you almost nothing about how that colour will read on your own north-facing living room in February, when Calgary light comes in low and flat off the snow.
So put it on the actual wall. Upload a photo of the room or the front of the house, try the colour on your own surfaces, and change your mind as many times as you like. Interior residential jobs then come back with a real number in minutes instead of three days of phone tag.

What painting actually costs in Calgary
Most Calgary painting companies say "call for pricing." Here are our working ranges instead. They assume a walls-only scope with materials included, and they exclude the 5% GST that is the only sales tax in Alberta. Prep condition, ceiling height and colour change move these numbers more than floor area does.
| Scope | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Single bedroom, walls only | $450 – $900 |
| Living room, walls only | $800 – $1,200 |
| Full interior, three-bedroom home | $3,200 – $6,500 |
| Exterior, bungalow | $2,800 – $5,000 |
| Exterior, two-storey detached | $3,500 – $8,000 |
| Exterior, two-storey stucco | $4,500 – $9,500 |
| Kitchen cabinets, sprayed | $2,800 – $6,000 |
| Trim, fascia and doors only | $900 – $2,200 |

What Calgary weather does to a paint job
Chinooks can lift the temperature twenty or thirty degrees in hours, repeatedly through one winter. Every swing is a freeze-thaw cycle that works moisture behind the coating and breaks the bond. Sitting a kilometre above sea level with a lot of clear days adds real UV load, so south and west elevations fade years before the north wall does.
That is why prep decides how long an exterior lasts here: washing off chalking, scraping what has let go, priming bare substrate, caulking the joints water gets through, then a flexible exterior acrylic that moves with the wall. Stucco needs breathable product and honest crack repair; fibre cement is the most paint-friendly cladding in the city.
More on this in our Calgary painting guides.
What you're actually paying for
When two quotes are eight hundred dollars apart, the difference is almost never the paint. It is prep. Prep is the line item that decides whether the job looks right in twelve years or starts letting go in five: filling and sanding, spot-priming bare patches, and caulking every joint that moves. A quote with no caulking line is not cheaper — it is a bill you pay later, when water has already been behind the trim for two winters.
Two coats means two coats. Self-priming paint is still paint; on a colour change, on bare filler, or on enamel trim that gets touched every day, one pass leaves you with roller sheen and patchy hide that shows up the first sunny afternoon. That is why our estimate names the product line, the sheen and the number of coats per surface rather than saying "premium paint." You should be able to read the sheen on your baseboards off the quote before we open a can.
"Materials included, GST excluded" means the paint, primer, caulking, filler, sandpaper, tape and masking are already in the number, and the only thing added at the end is Alberta's 5% GST. There is no per-gallon surprise afterwards. Site protection and cleanup are scope, not a favour: floors and furniture covered, switch plates off, edges cut clean, everything back where it was, and the paint cans labelled and left with you for touch-ups.
- Prep priced as its own work — fill, sand, spot-prime, caulk
- Two full coats, stated per surface, on every colour change
- Product line, sheen and coat count named in writing
- Materials included; 5% GST is the only thing added
- Floors, furniture and fixtures masked and protected daily
- Leftover paint labelled and left with you for touch-ups

Painters across all four Calgary quadrants
Quadrants are not just addresses here — they are housing stock. Build era decides substrate and substrate decides prep, so we ask which part of the city you are in before talking product.

Varsity, Tuscany, Panorama Hills, Bowness, Kensington. Mostly 1970s–90s stucco in the established pockets, fibre cement further north.
Painters in Northwest Calgary →Southwest Calgary
Marda Loop, Altadore, Killarney, Signal Hill, Aspen Woods. Infill new builds beside character homes, with hard west-facing exposure.
Painters in Southwest Calgary →Southeast Calgary
Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Cranston, McKenzie Towne, Inglewood. Newer suburbs hitting their first repaint, plus older wood siding downtown-side.
Painters in Southeast Calgary →Northeast Calgary
Bridgeland, Renfrew, Saddle Ridge, Skyview, Marlborough. Established stucco and siding, plus most of the city's commercial bay space.
Painters in Northeast Calgary →Outside the city too — see the full service area.
How to book us
Two ways. Use the visualizer if you want to see the colour and the number yourself first, or call (403) 919-3224 and talk to someone who paints for a living. Both end in the same place: a written scope you approve before we open a can.

Calgary painting questions
How much do painters charge in Calgary?
Calgary painters typically charge about $1.95 per square foot of interior wall area once a job passes roughly 500 sq ft of wall, with smaller jobs landing near a flat $1,000. Exteriors run about $2,800 to $5,000 for a bungalow and $3,500 to $8,000 for a two-storey. Alberta has no PST, so 5% GST is the only tax added.
How do I find a good painter near me in Calgary?
Start with proof of liability insurance and a business registered through Service Alberta, and check that anyone taking a deposit early holds an Alberta prepaid contracting licence. Then compare written scopes rather than totals — a cheap quote in Calgary almost always means fewer coats or skipped prep.
Do Calgary painters work in winter?
Yes — interior work runs year-round in Calgary, because heated rooms cure paint the same in January as in July. Exteriors stop once temperatures drop below about 10°C. Winter is actually the fastest time to book an interior job, since the whole city queues up for summer exterior work instead.
Do I need to move out while you paint?
No. We work room by room, so you keep the rest of the house. Furniture moves to the centre and gets covered, floors are protected, and low-odour water-based paint means the room is usable the same evening. Only a full-house repaint on a tight schedule is easier empty.
How long does it take to paint a house in Calgary?
A single room takes one day, a full three-bedroom interior three to five days, and an exterior three to six days depending on siding condition and weather windows. Prep is most of that time; the painting itself is fast. We give you the day count with the written scope.
How long does a Calgary painting quote take?
With most contractors, three days to a week: a callback, a site visit, then the written quote. With Coatly, interior residential estimates come back in minutes from your own photos, and exteriors are reviewed and quoted without a scheduled site visit.
Do you need to see my house before quoting?
Not for interior residential work — photos and your room details are enough for an estimate. Exterior projects get a human review of your photos because siding condition, height and access matter more than square footage. If something on site changes the work, we tell you before starting.
When is the best time to hire exterior painters in Calgary?
Book in early spring for work between late May and mid-September, when daytime and overnight temperatures stay above about 10°C so coatings cure properly. The whole city competes for those four months, so quotes secured in March and April get the better slots.
Are you insured?
Yes, Coatly carries liability insurance and we will send the certificate on request before any work starts. Coatly is a new name in Calgary, but the crew on your job has been painting Alberta homes for over ten years.
Which parts of Calgary do you cover?
All four quadrants — NW, NE, SW and SE — plus Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks, High River, Strathmore, Canmore, Banff and Didsbury. Roughly a 100 km radius from Calgary.
Skip the week of waiting.
