Popcorn ceiling removal in Calgary, finished smooth and repainted.

Stipple ceilings date a room faster than any wall colour. Scraped, skim-coated flat and painted, the same room reads a decade newer.

How much does popcorn ceiling removal cost in Calgary?

Popcorn ceiling removal in Calgary generally runs about $3 to $6 per square foot including scraping, skim coating and repainting. A standard living room lands roughly between $800 and $1,600. Older homes needing asbestos testing before work begins should budget for that separately.

Test before you scrape — this part is not optional

Textured ceiling compounds manufactured before the 1990s can contain asbestos. Scraping one dry releases fibres into the air of the room you live in. This is not a scare tactic; it is the reason professional removal starts with a sample sent to a lab rather than with a scraper.

If your home predates the 1990s, get the ceiling tested before anyone touches it. If it tests positive, the work goes to a licensed abatement contractor, not a painter. If it is clear, removal is a straightforward job.

How removal actually works

The room is emptied and sealed — floors, walls and any fixtures. The texture is misted with water so it releases in soft sheets rather than dust clouds, then scraped down to the board.

What is underneath is rarely pretty. Stipple was frequently used to hide rough taping in the first place, so the ceiling gets skim coated, sanded flat, primed and finished in two coats of ceiling paint. That skim-and-sand stage is the bulk of the labour and the entire reason the result looks like new construction rather than a scraped ceiling.

  • Asbestos testing first on pre-1990 homes
  • Room fully masked and sealed, floors protected
  • Texture misted and scraped wet to control dust
  • Skim coat, sand and prime to a flat finish
  • Two coats of ceiling paint
  • Optional: pot light or fixture coordination while the ceiling is open

The alternative: paint it instead

If budget or timing rules removal out, a stipple ceiling can simply be painted — and a bright, clean white ceiling makes a surprising difference on its own. Textured ceilings drink paint and need a roller with a deep nap, so coverage costs more than a flat ceiling of the same size.

It is a fair middle path. It just does not change the fact that the texture is still there.

Questions people ask

Does my Calgary home have asbestos in the ceiling texture?

The only way to know is a lab test on a sample. Textured compounds from before the 1990s may contain it, and homes from that era are common across Calgary's established communities. Test before scraping — never assume either way.

How messy is popcorn ceiling removal?

Contained, when done properly. Misting the texture before scraping keeps it falling as damp sheets onto masked floors instead of hanging in the air. The dustier stage is sanding the skim coat, which is why the room stays sealed until the finish is on.

Can I stay in the house during the work?

Usually yes, as long as the work zone stays sealed off. Most people avoid the room in question and carry on normally in the rest of the house. A whole-home ceiling removal is more disruptive and worth planning around.
