Exterior painting in Calgary, built for weather that breaks paint.
Siding, stucco, trim, fascia, doors and garages. Calgary's freeze-thaw swings and thin-air UV punish a cheap exterior coat — prep and product are where the years come from.

How much does it cost to paint the exterior of a house in Calgary?
Why exterior paint fails faster in Calgary than almost anywhere else
A chinook can lift the temperature twenty or thirty degrees in a matter of hours, and it can do that repeatedly through a single winter. Every one of those swings is a freeze-thaw cycle: moisture in and behind the coating expands, contracts, and works away at the bond. A rigid or under-prepped film cracks; water gets behind it; the next cycle lifts it.
Add elevation. Calgary is roughly a kilometre above sea level with a lot of clear days, so UV load on a south or west elevation is genuinely harder than in most Canadian cities. Deep and saturated colours fade first, and they fade unevenly — the south wall goes before the north wall, which is why a five-year-old paint job can look fine from the street and tired from the driveway.
None of this is fixed by buying more expensive paint alone. It is fixed by prep: washing off chalking, scraping what has already let go, priming bare substrate, caulking the joints that let water in, and then using an exterior acrylic with enough flexibility to move with the wall instead of fighting it.
The exterior season here is shorter than people think
Most exterior coatings need surface and air temperatures to hold above roughly 10°C, including overnight, while the film cures. In practice that means the reliable Calgary exterior window runs about May through September, with early and late shoulder weeks depending on the year.
The result is a bottleneck: everyone books the same four months. Getting your quote sorted in March or April rather than July is the difference between painting this season and painting next one.
Surfaces we handle
Different substrates fail differently and get prepped differently. Stucco needs elastomeric or masonry-appropriate coatings and crack treatment; wood needs scraping, sanding and spot-priming; fibre cement and vinyl need the right adhesion primer and colours that will not overheat the panel.
- Stucco and acrylic stucco — crack repair, masonry primer, breathable topcoats
- Wood siding, Hardie and fibre cement, vinyl and aluminium
- Fascia, soffit, eaves and window trim
- Front doors, garage doors and railings
- Decks, fences and pergolas — stain or solid colour
Hail, and what it means for your repaint
Calgary sits in Canada's hail alley. The August 2024 storm alone drove an estimated $3.25 billion in insured losses, and hail season here runs roughly June through August. A hail event does not only dent siding and shingles — it chips and pits paint film, and those pits are exactly where water starts working.
If you have taken hail, sort the repair and the repaint together. Painting over pitted, unrepaired siding just buries the problem for a season. If there is an insurance claim in play, we will work to the scope your adjuster has approved.
Painting outside Calgary
We paint exteriors right across the region, and Cochrane gets its own page because the wind off the ridge and the chinook cycle out there wear a finish faster than most of the city does. If your house is west of Calgary, read what exterior work costs in Cochrane before you budget.
Questions people ask
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Calgary?
Late May through mid-September is the dependable window, because most exterior coatings need daytime and overnight temperatures to stay above about 10°C while the film cures. June and July book out first, so getting quoted in early spring is the practical way to secure a summer slot.
How long should exterior paint last in Calgary?
With proper prep and a quality exterior acrylic, expect roughly 7 to 10 years on well-maintained siding and stucco, with south and west elevations showing wear first. A job that skipped washing, scraping and priming can start failing in as little as three to five years here, which is why prep is not the place to save money.
Do you pressure wash before painting?
Yes, cleaning is part of every exterior job. Calgary's dry, dusty summers leave chalking and grit on siding, and paint will not bond to either. On older or fragile substrates we use lower pressure and hand work rather than blasting a wall that cannot take it.
Can you paint vinyl siding a dark colour?
Only with vinyl-safe formulations. Standard dark paint absorbs more heat than the panel was designed for, and vinyl can warp or buckle. There are vinyl-safe colour lines built for exactly this — we will tell you honestly whether the colour you want is achievable on your siding.
Why is exterior work not priced instantly like interior?
Because the number is driven by things a photo cannot fully show: existing coating condition, height and access, how much scraping and carpentry the trim needs, and siding type. We review your photos and details and come back with a considered number rather than a fast guess we would have to walk back.
