How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Calgary?

Painting kitchen cabinets in Calgary typically costs $2,800–$5,500 for an average kitchen of 25–35 doors and drawer fronts, sprayed in a two-component finish. Small galley kitchens start near $1,800; large kitchens with an island and a butler's pantry can reach $7,000. That is roughly 20–30% of the cost of replacing the same cabinets.

What you are paying for in a sprayed cabinet finish

Cabinet refinishing is not a rolling job. Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labelled, degreased, sanded and sprayed off-site or in a controlled area of the house; boxes and frames are masked and sprayed in place. The finish is a two-component or waterborne alkyd product built to survive fingernails, cleaners and dinner-time abuse — not wall paint.

Most of the cost is labour and dust control. A typical Calgary kitchen is three to five days of work: one for teardown and prep, two for spray and cure, one for reassembly and hardware.

Calgary kitchens: the oak question

Huge swathes of Calgary housing stock — Ranchlands, Woodbine, Dalhousie, most of the 1980s and 90s inner suburbs — have golden oak cabinets with pronounced open grain. Paint alone will not hide that grain; it telegraphs straight through the finish.

If you want the smooth modern look, the grain has to be filled and sanded first. That adds $400 to $1,200 to the kitchen but is the difference between a repaint that looks new and one that looks like painted oak. Maple, MDF and thermofoil doors skip this step entirely.

  • Golden oak: plan on grain filling for a smooth finish
  • Maple or MDF shaker: straightforward, best-value candidates
  • Thermofoil: needs a bonding primer, and peeling edges must be repaired first
  • Laminate boxes with solid wood doors: very common in Calgary, both can be sprayed

Painting versus replacing

Replacing an average Calgary kitchen's cabinetry runs $12,000 to $30,000 and up once you count counters, plumbing moves and a week or two without a working kitchen. A refinish is typically 20–30% of that and done in under a week.

The honest limit: painting fixes the look, not the layout. If the boxes are water-damaged, the drawer slides are failing, or you hate where the fridge sits, paint is the wrong tool. If the layout works and the colour dates the room, refinishing wins every time.

What is included

A Coatly cabinet quote covers removal and labelling of doors and drawer fronts, degreasing, sanding, bonding primer, two sprayed finish coats, reassembly and hardware reinstall. Anything else — grain filling, box interiors, new hardware, glass inserts — is a visible line item you can add or remove.

Questions people ask

Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it in Calgary?

If the boxes are structurally sound and the layout works, yes. Refinishing costs roughly 20–30% of replacement and takes under a week, which is why it is one of the highest-return updates on a Calgary resale listing.

How long does painted cabinet finish last?

A properly prepped, sprayed two-component finish typically holds up 10 years or more in a family kitchen. Failure almost always traces to skipped degreasing or a brush-applied wall paint rather than a cabinet-grade coating.

Can you paint oak cabinets without the grain showing?

Yes, but only with grain filling. The open grain in golden oak is sanded, filled and re-sanded before primer, which adds $400 to $1,200 to a typical Calgary kitchen and produces a smooth, factory-like surface.

How long is my kitchen out of use?

Usually three to five days. Doors come off on day one, spraying and curing takes the middle of the week, and reassembly happens at the end. Countertops, sink and appliances stay usable throughout in most jobs.
