Cost breakdown

Garage door painting cost in Calgary

Single and double door prices, the variables that move them, and an honest comparison against buying a new door.

Garage door masked with film and tape, primed and ready for its finish coats
Most of a garage door quote is prep: wash, sand, rust work and masking before any colour.

How much does it cost to paint a garage door in Calgary?

Repainting a garage door in Calgary costs about $350 to $550 for a single door and $600 to $900 for a double, including rust-inhibiting primer and a sprayed exterior finish. Adding the frame and trim is $100 to $250. Heavy rust repair, a dark-to-light colour change or awkward access push a job toward the top of its range.

What sets the base price

Width does most of the work. A double door is roughly twice the surface of a single, so it takes about twice the material and noticeably more masking, which is why the ranges sit where they do.

After that, it is condition. A door that needs a wash, a scuff sand and two coats is a straightforward half day. A door with a lifting previous coat has to be taken back to something sound first, and that scraping and sanding is the part that varies most between two doors that look similar from the street.

The add-ons that are usually worth it

Almost every quote we write includes the frame and trim, because a fresh door beside a weathered frame reads as unfinished. The masking is already up, so doing both at once costs a fraction of a separate visit.

The same logic applies to the man-door and any exterior door on the same elevation. If the crew is on site with the sprayer out, adding a door is cheap; calling us back in September to do one door is not.

  • Frame and trim: $100 – $250, and the single best value on the job
  • Man-door or side entry: $120 – $250 for both faces and the frame
  • Rust repair on the bottom panel: $100 – $400 depending on how far it has spread
  • Dark-to-light colour change: usually an extra coat, roughly 20–30% more on the paint portion

Where Calgary changes the number

Road salt is the local cost driver. Calgary uses magnesium chloride, which stays active down to about -15°C and is harder on steel than plain rock salt, so the bottom panel of a street-facing door here corrodes sooner than the same door would in a milder city. That bottom-panel prep is the line item most likely to move your quote.

Sun exposure is the other one. At 1,100 m with roughly 333 sunny days a year, south- and west-facing doors chalk faster, and a badly faded factory finish takes more sanding to give the primer a clean profile. It does not change the price much, but it is why two identical doors on opposite sides of the same street can quote differently.

Repainting versus replacing, in dollars

A replacement door installed in Calgary generally starts near $1,500 and runs past $5,000 once you are into insulated, windowed or carriage-style units. Against that, a $350 to $900 repaint on a door that still runs properly is one of the highest-return jobs on a house.

The break point is mechanical, not cosmetic. If the springs and opener are near the end of their life, or a panel has rusted through rather than just rusted, put the money toward the new door. If the door works and only looks its age, paint it.

What is in a Coatly garage door quote

The number covers the degrease and wash, sanding, rust treatment where it is needed, masking with the weather seal pulled back, primer suited to the substrate, two sprayed finish coats and cleanup. GST is shown separately.

  • Direct-to-metal rust-inhibiting primer on steel and aluminum
  • Flexible exterior enamel and full edge sealing on wood
  • Two sprayed coats, three when a colour change needs it
  • Balance check before we leave, and no paint in the tracks or rollers

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to paint a double garage door in Calgary?

About $600 to $900 for a steel or aluminum double, including rust-inhibiting primer and two sprayed coats. Adding the frame and trim brings it to roughly $700 to $1,150.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace a garage door?

Painting, by a wide margin — $350 to $900 against $1,500 or more for a new installed door. Replacement only makes financial sense when a panel has rusted through or the door's mechanical life is over anyway.

Does the price include the frame and trim?

It is quoted as a separate line so you can decide, and it runs $100 to $250. We recommend it on nearly every job, since a new door against a weathered frame still looks like a job half done.

Why is my quote at the top of the range?

Usually rust on the bottom panel, a previous coat that is lifting and has to be sanded back, a big colour change that needs an extra coat, or tight access under a second-storey overhang.
